The Icelandic musician Jon Thor Birgisson, otherwise known as Jonsi, has been awarded the inaugural Nordic Music Prize.
Jonsi is perhaps still best-known as the lead singer of Sigur Ros — but the Nordic Music Prize was awarded for his solo album, “Go”; which came out last year.
The prize jury concluded: “The music of the winner could only have been made here, in the North. It sounds and almost smells like Iceland. It’s brave and life affirming pop music that grabs you by the heart in flamboyant technicolour.”
One other Icelander was in the final 12: and that was Olof Arnalds for her album “Innundir skinni”.
Jonsi was very pleased with his award and was coincidentally in Oslo anyway when the winner was announced, enjoying a romantic weekend break, Visir.is reported.
