Bodyguards are now following the Icelandic interior and trade ministers’ every step and their homes are under 24 hour surveillance following threats made against them.
that security around the Prime Minister has also been tightened as a precaution.
The homes of the two ministers are being watched by police guards round the clock and officers from the national police chief’s division are following Steingrímur J. Sigfússon and Ögmundur Jónasson wherever they go – including to this morning’s cabinet meeting. RÚV sources also claim that security around Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir has been tightened; although she is not being followed closely by bodyguards.
Ögmundur Jónasson confirmed the news to reporters, but would say little else on the matter this morning.
Ögmundur is the Minister for the Interior and is therefore in charge of the police and judiciary. His home was attacked last May and two windows were broken by thrown stones. Following that event surveillance of the house was tightened temporarily. It is also not long since a small bomb was planted near the Prime Ministry when a cabinet meeting was in progress.
“I am just listening to police advice and leave it to them to find out what this issue is all about,” Ögmundur said earlier.
